Existence of cultural and museological areas inside the building (Museum of Transport and Communications)
1840 – As the project wasn´t proceeding, the deputy Passos Manuel presented to the Chamber of Deputies a requirement for the construction of a new building around the former customs house.
1857 – On the 16th of June, a legislation that authorizes the government to incur a loan for the construction of the building was published. On the 22nd of June, a commission for the new customs house project was organized.
1859 – The loan is approved, on the 23rd of May due to the diligences of the Commercial Bank of Porto. On the 12th of October 1859, the commission is dissolved and the government proceeds with the construction of a building based on the “Colson Project” that foresees the construction at Ribeirinha, the beach at the front of Miragaia.
The construction of the new building began at the responsibility of Francisco de Carvalho Mourão Pinheiro and Faustino José da Victoria.
